Secondo Shawn Stevenson, una revisione sistematica del US Department of Health and Human Services ha rilevato che il supporto sociale aumenta l'attività fisica di quasi il 50 percento. L'effetto non è trascurabile. Uno studio separato citato da Stevenson ha rilevato che le coppie che si allenavano insieme abbandonavano solo nel 6 percento dei casi, rispetto al 43 percento di coloro che si allenavano da soli, una differenza notevole che suggerisce come il legame sociale stesso funzioni come un dispositivo strutturale di impegno.
