Un principio centrale della fisiologia ossea è la meccanotraduzione: il processo attraverso cui le cellule ossee rilevano lo stress meccanico e rispondono depositando nuovo materiale osseo. Secondo la Dr.ssa Stacy Sims, fisiologa dell'esercizio specializzata nella salute femminile, il rimodellamento osseo richiede un carico meccanico equivalente ad almeno tre volte il peso corporeo. In base a questo criterio, la camminata, che genera circa 1,2 volte il peso corporeo in forza di reazione al suolo, è ben al di sotto della soglia. La corsa si avvicina di più con circa 2,5 volte il peso corporeo, ma potrebbe comunque non soddisfare pienamente lo stimolo necessario per ottimizzare la densità ossea.
